It is therefore important that carpets should be properly cleaned and well-maintained, as this can:
- Improve air quality. Carpets trap and gather dust over time, and these trapped dust particles can be released back into the air, which can trigger symptoms in people who have asthma or dust allergies. Carpets should therefore be cleaned regularly to remove accumulated dust.
- Prevent mould and mildew growth. Fabrics tend to hold and retain moisture very well, and the common application of carpets make it so that this moisture takes much longer to evaporate. And in this moisture-rich environment, mould and mildew grows and spreads onto the flooring underneath and the nooks where the carpet and wall meet, which can result in major damage if these areas are made out of wood. A proper cleaning should be able to remove as much moisture from the carpet as possible to prevent this from happening.
- Kill and inhibit the spread of bacteria. Cool, damp places are one of the best breeding grounds for bacteria and viruses — and moist or wet carpets are great examples. Make sure your carpets are well-maintained to prevent the spread of diseases and eliminate odours in the carpet.
- Extend the lifespan of the carpet. The removal of moisture from the carpet allows it to stay soft and fluffy, which maintains its condition and allows it to last longer.
